Find out more about the Haute-Route with Mountain World Travel

The Haute Route, (or The High Route or Mountaineers' Route) is the name given to a route (with several variations) undertaken on foot or by ski touring between ChamonixFrance and ZermattSwitzerland.

First charted as a summer mountaineering route by members of the Alpine Club (UK) in the mid 19th century, the route takes around 12+ days walking (or 7+ days skiing) running the 180 km from the Chamonix valley, home of Mont Blanc to Zermatt, home of the Matterhorn.

Since the route was originally walked by members of an English club they dubbed it the The High Level Route; however, this became translated into French when it was first successfully undertaken on skis in 1911. Now it is commonly referred to by English speakers only by the French title for both summer and winter routes.

Technically, haute route has become a generic description for any of the many multi-day alpine hut-to-hut tours; the correct term is therefore, "Chamonix-Zermatt Haute Route".

Tips for Adventure Travel Vacations

by Leroy Calstard
Safety should be concern number one when considering the location of a possible vacation, especially when it could be overseas. There are several safety rules that an adventure traveler must observe when making the trip to the destination as well as during the activities done there. As much effort and time should be given to planning safety measures for a trip as to the trip itself.
When preparing for adventure travel excursions, it is important to know your body’s limits so as not to exert yourself. Adventure vacations do not demand that you participate as you could want to go on one only to get near enough to some very stunning photographic subjects. The reasons a person participates in an adventure travel vacation may be different for each traveler. While one might want to scuba dive in the sea another may only want to take close-up pictures of the dolphins leaping from the waters.
It is significant to know exactly what types of activities you expect to do on an adventure travel excursion. For instance, when traveling for a holiday, locations that are celebrating can be added to the itinerary while others are cut out. The interactions with local people can also be arranged ahead of time when you know exactly where you want to explore.
Just like when you get a second opinion from a doctor, it is important to research every angle of the different adventure travel vacations offered. Price is not always and indicator of the quality of a trip as sometimes the more expensive ones lack a real in depth look at a location’s customs and hidden sights. But it can be vice-versa so that is why it is incredibly important to really understand what I being offered for what price. You should even seek out others who have gone on adventure travel vacations and ask them whether they were satisfied with the package they received for whatever price. You will thank yourself later that you took the time to do that.
In the same vein, never attempt to go on an adventure travel tour that is beyond your means. These type vacations are quite attractive and because of that, curiosity may make you commit a mistake in how much you spend and for what. Make it a point to review all of the stipulations and rules of an adventure tour contract before signing it. And determine the refund policy of the tour company that you have decided to conduct business with before signing anything. In case you cannot make the tour, it is important to know if you are entitled to a full refund, per the company’s policies, or something less.
Proper vaccination shots and updated passports are two more things to make sure to get before going on an adventure travel vacation.

Let Mountain World Travel help you create your perfect adventure vacation.

Smoke escapes a little here and there. Hikes between summits covered with snow, glaciers of blue reflections, verdant plains, deep and deserted fjords of black ash...A wild force of nature, Iceland, land of extremes!
In just a few days, this program takes us through the various landscapes of south Iceland. Here we find everything that Iceland is renowned for: the black ocean beaches, the sea cliffs, big glaciers, rivers, volcanoes, craters, lava fields, the geysers, hot springs etc. A very complete program for just a short stay in the country.
